Education

Panola County has two public school systems that serve county residents---North Panola and South PanolaNorth Delta School, located in Batesville, is a private academy.  For the pursuit of higher education, Panola County is also in close proximity to several community colleges and four-year institutions.

Major Events / Festivals

Sardis AprilFest & Open Car Show

Sardis Chamber of Commerce and the Mississippi Delta Street Rodders host an annual AprilFest and Open Car Show on Main Street each April.  A 5K Walk/Run benefitting the Heflin House Museum of Sardis is held each year.  Food vendors and crafters are organized by the Sardis Chamber of Commerce (662.487.3451 or 662.609.2159).  The Car Show is organized by local Mississippi Delta Street Rodders Ronnie and Angie Hinton (662.934.6189 or 662.934.4143).  Fun for all ages!
 

City of Batesville SpringFest

SpringFest is an annual two day festival on the Downtown Square in Batesville featuring great music, good food and lots of fun.  A wide variety of events and entertainment are offered to our festival goers.  Live radio remotes with prize giveaways and amusement rides and games are all part of the fun.  Throughout the two-day festival national, regional and local entertainment is featured.   Admission to the festival area is free.  There is also a 5K held the Saturday morning each year of SpringFest.  Registration is available at www.racesonline.com.  The 2014 SpringFest will be held May 16-17.  For more information, please call 888.872.6652.

 

St. Jude Bass Classic

The St. Jude Bass Classic is an annual pick your partner fishing tournament held at the Sardis Lake on Memorial Day weekend.  The tournament is limited to 350 boats and benefits St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.  For more information, visit www.stjudefishing.com
  


Panola Partnership Legislative Day

This event annually each fall for our members.  The morning consists of a brief coffee time before a series of informative sessions for our members and guests at the Batesville Civic Center.  The format is open so the audience is invited to ask questions and have the opportunity to speak one-on-one with the panel during the breaks.  For the afternoon we have two recreational events: a golf scramble at Panola Country Club or a Skeet Shoot at the ONS Sporting Clays in Como.  Whether you choose to participate in any of the above activities or not, a casual reception is held that evening from 5:30-7:30 p.m at Panola Country Club.  For more information, please call 888.872.6652.

 

Batesville's Annual "Showoff on the Square" Open Car Show

This annual event is held on the first Saturday in October in Downtown Batesville.  Showoff on the Square is a one-day event organized by the Batesville Main Street Program volunteers and office staff that features an open car show, food vendors, and a children’s area.  The car show is open to all makes & models of car, truck or motorcycle.  Registration is available prior to the event or the morning of the event.  Judging is held during the afternoon followed by a trophy presentation.  For the public to enjoy, there is live entertainment, great food and door prizes.  

 

City of Batesville Holiday Open House

The Holiday Open House is held the Sunday before Thanksgiving each year from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.  City-wide merchants open their doors for customers to begin their holiday shopping.  Additional activities include live entertainment, carriage rides, and various childrens' activities in Santa's Workshop.  Local/regional musicians perform at the Downtown Memorial Park (Amphitheater).  There is no charge for the public.  Carriage ride tickets are sold for a minimal fee to benefit Batesville Main Street projects.  Free activities for children include volunteers helping with Letters to Santa and ornament decorating for the town Christmas tree.  Aside from downtown merchants, local/regional artists set up in a banquet hall downtown to sell/display their wares.  For more information, please call 888.872.6652.

Highways

Panola County has a modern road system with improvements taking place each year as we continue to grow.

Batesville, the largest of Panola County’s municipalities, is located at the intersection of Interstate 55, which runs north and south, and Mississippi Highway 6, which runs east and west.  Batesville is approximately 45 miles south of Memphis, Tennessee.

Other municipalities in Panola County served by Interstate 55 are Sardis, located 8 miles north of Batesville; Como, located 14 miles north of Batesville; and the Pope/Courtland area, located 6 miles south of Batesville.

State Highways 3, 35, 51, 310, 315, 322 allow Panola County to service the surrounding counties of Lafayette, Tallahatchie, Tate, Quitman and Yalobusha.

Panola County is served by Grenada Railway LLC, formerly Canadian National (CN) Railroad.
 

Ports

Panola County is not located along a major waterway and therefore does not have a port.

However, The Port of Memphis is located 60 miles north of Batesville via Interstate 55.  The Port of Memphis is the Mississippi River’s second largest inland port.  The Port of Memphis is one of the fastest growing designated ports of entry in the U.S.
 

Airport

Panola County Airport (KPMU) is available for small charter planes.

Interstate 55 is a direct link to the Memphis International Airport (MEM), which, as the international headquarters of FedEx, houses the busiest cargo airport in the world.
